Welcome to Writerly Wednesday. This week Nancy Jardine is our Guest.
Bio
Having taught 11-12 year olds for many years, Nancy Jardine finally gave up the chalk in the autumn of 2011. During the last few years she has written a historical novel, three contemporary novels- two of which are what she calls her history/mysteries. She’s also written the first of a time-travel series of novels for children aged 9-12years, and a family saga is her current work in progress.
Nancy lives in the picturesque castle country of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, with her husband who now does all the cooking…the menu far more exciting and tasty than it used to be! Ancestry research-if you hadn’t already guessed-is one of her hobbies, as is participating in exciting events with her family which drag her away from the keyboard. Working in her large garden, she tends real flowers and now grows spectacular weeds which she’s becoming very fond of!

Blurb: Monogamy Twist
Luke Salieri thought he’d seen everything. But when he inherits a dilapidated English estate from a woman he’s never heard of—and with quirky conditions besides—it’s a mystery he wants resolved immediately. There must be a woman out there who can meet his needs. But how far will he have to go to persuade her? Lucrative employment for a whole year? The job of researching the old house and its fantastic contents is enticing – but Rhia Ashton can’t see herself living with gorgeous Luke Salieri and not wanting his body as well. Can she live and sleep with him for a whole year and then walk away? Rhia has her own ideas about what will make it worth her while.
Excerpt: Monogamy Twist
…..I don’t expect love, Rhia, but I do expect sex.” He closed the gap between them and positioned himself in front of her, straddling her chair, his long legs wide balanced as he looked down at her. “If you’re honest you’ll agree we have enough chemistry going on between us to ignite a bonfire.”
Rhia’s face flamed at his candid assessment but couldn’t deny what he was saying.
“I was thinking more of a mutually agreed arrangement where we share all aspects of our lives-including sex-till the year is up. Then we’d stop the arrangement.” He was a mere step away.
“That sounds like I’d be a long-term whore or a mistress!” Rhia recoiled from him.
“We’d be living together legally as man and wife.” Luke bent toward her.
“For a year?” She remained rooted in place, but her whole body frizzled.
“That’s what it will take to fulfill the requirements of the will. Then the property will be mine.”
Barely a hairsbreadth separated them now.
Rhia was still rattled by his cold propositions, her chin hitching up again as she faced him. “You would seem to be getting a lot more out of this arrangement than I would.”
Interview
1. In three days, all power will go off, everywhere for a very long time. What will you include in your author survival kit?
I’d be greedy -Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy that I could read and re-read. My reading glasses otherwise I’d be sunk, ten fat pads of paper, lots of pencils and a pen knife for sharpening. Why ten? I’ve no idea.
2. Where did the idea for the work you are promoting arise?
It was a combination of re-reading Charles Dickens novels concurrently with Ancestry research. Monogamy Twist is my contemporary version of a ‘Dickensian style’ bequest mystery with very quirky conditions attached.
3. What do you like to read?
Lots of different genres, but I’m inclined towards happy endings and that often means romance in its many sub genres. My TBR kindle pile also includes historical novels, fantasy, suspense, mysteries, chick-lit. Sometimes I read plays or poetry for a break from fiction. Research is usually historical, or perhaps geographical for settings in my novels.
4. Tell us about the most exciting place you have ever visited?
I’ve had the good fortune to travel to many places, but the possibly the most impressive was a visit to Oman. I stayed in an incredible hotel that had been built as a palace-the downstairs foyer/ huge atrium featuring a real live harpist to listen to during an afternoon tea session. The private beach setting was fabulous and the tiki hut barman there made me a personally designed cocktail (or two) every evening before a delicious dinner. The mountains bordering the sea are hauntingly impressive and the landscape behind that is ‘other-worldly’ – like another planet. Middle East camel rides and ‘wadi bashing’ (ie. desert treks in ‘four by fours’ to water sources) are fantastic fun, as are the specialised dining experiences way out in the desert under ‘Arabian nights’ tents with traditional food, belly dancing etc.
5. What is the most mundane, day to day, thing you can share about yourself?
I have a very large glass of orange juice to start the day followed by 2 cups of coffee. I look at the diary, and check my lists. I’m rubbish at keeping up with said lists!
6. What scares you the most?
Until a few years ago I was a full time teacher of 11-12year olds. I came late to writing for pleasure (fiction as opposed to work related non-fiction tasks) so, I guess, I’m scared that I won’t have enough time now to write all the books I want to before writer’s block sets in, or the dreaded ‘dementia’ makes me forget all those lovely words I want to use.
From Sally – I dread having the type of stroke that would leave me unable to talk or write.
7. Tell us anything but keep it G rated.
I love what we Scots call tablet (others may call it hard fudge) but have to limit it to a treat. I’m partial to a nice glass of red wine with dinner in the evening. I plan to do a target of daily miles on my exercise bike… but rarely reach it. I now find I’m glued to my keyboard and am much less keen to keep up with the lovely weeds in my now overgrown garden. BUT…I LOVE MY WRITING DAY.

Nancy!
Thank you for being my guest. You are terribly popular! You should be with the Kick Butt stuff you are doing.
Sally
Thanks for allowing me to be a guest today, Sally. It’s time for my Scottish bedtime *waving good night*.
Thank you so much, Sandra! Your comments are much appreciated!
Forgot to mention The Beltane Choice. Wishing you all the best for that one too.
I’ve never been on a real vacation, but if I did, my first choice would be Scotland. The beautiful landscapes and history must be inspiring.
Love Monogamy Twist. Good luck with Take Me Now.
Best wishes,
Sandy
Thanks for visiting LaVerne, and Paula. My Middle East trips were fantastic but lots of other places have been, too!
Great answers, Nancy. Your Oman visit sounds like my visits to Sharjah in the UAE, especially barbecues out in the desert, and dune bashing! Know how you feel, too, about not having enough time left to write – but maybe we ‘oldies’ are keeping dementia at bay by keeping our minds active with research and playing with words!
Hi Nancy!
I’m incredibly jealous of your hotel stay, sigh… that sounds like my kind of holiday! In my dreams anyway 🙂
Lovely learning a bit more about you.
LaVerne
