Life is a Story

Tell it Big

Saturday in Montana–Index Cards and Putting Things Off

I am really just stalling.  I have a project that has been completed, as much as a third, forth or fifth draft can be completed.  I have set this aside long enough that the next two read throughs will surprise me.  The task I am working through, now, or when I stop putting it off, is to record in text, the scene summaries.

I get out a pile of index cards and each character, even the woman with the empty stroller gets their own card.  I make up a scene card that tells the scene number, who the scene belongs to and what happens in the scene.  These things are also recorded in my word processor so I have a good start on a synopsis.

After this is done, I can move scenes around, track main characters and tweak things.

So, I suppose you are wondering why I just shared all of this when I could be building a nest of index cards?

I am having a high pain day, not an excuse, just a distraction.  No grandkids, just a darling husband who is running the dishwasher and building his own nest in the basement for some football game.  My fingers are cold, it is unusually warm in Montana.  The sun isn’t shining.  Emails are taken care of.  Did I say my fingers are cold?

Wait, my blog needs updating, that is why I am here.  I even have a note in my planner to update this blog.  The planner also says to buy envelopes.

Okay, before I get to work, I have to say the comments on the topic ‘Why do you read?’ are coming in sure and steady.  I am pleased to know I read for many of the same reasons participants are posting.  The contest or drawing doesn’t end until the last day of January.  If you haven’t commented there is still time.  Why do you read?  Go to the January Contest Page and tell us.

I need to water the plants.  I need to retrieve my white-board that was taken away, yesterday, to hold up a blanket that hid two children for until a fight broke out over the three-year-old’s inability to stay quiet and still.  Maybe, I should check FaceBook.

Once I get my white-board and index cards in order, I really have a pleasant time in my strange and chaotic world of invisible people.  I’m going to give some reader, somewhere, an escape, some new perspective and I know someone is waiting for it.  Why put it off?

Okay, let me post this and off to indexing I go.

Don’t touch anything sharp.
