Throughout the month of January I will write down your names on tiny bits of paper and store them in my NaNoWriMo Mug. This means you need to make sure I know who you are when you post and how to contact you. At the beginning of February, I will have my three year old grandson, โJeepersโ draw a name out of the cup.
The winner gets a $20.00 gift card to use at Amazon. I chose Amazon because I know how it works, not because I am getting a discount or any other compensation. I will be Posting the Winner and I will email the Gift Card Information.
I imagine you are wondering Whatโs the Contest, already.
Using the Comments Link, use 100 words or less to tell us why you read. There are no right or wrong answers to this question. Remember, I need your name and contact info for the mug and you need to use 100 words or less.
It is quite all right with me if you pass this link along in email, FaceBook, Twitter or anyway else you choose to network.
While you are in the neighborhood, drop by your favorite online bookstore and order a copy of my novel, If I Should Die.

I read to fall in love, cry, get goosebumps, avoid looking toward my dark closet, get angry, solve a problem and laugh. I read to visit places, meet new people and get ideas for things to try in the future!
I read for relaxation and escape.
I read to understand others…
I read for enjoyment and to expand my imagination.
I read because it is fun and a good way to learn words.
Books take me places! From the comfort of my bed or chair, I have traveled all around the world, and even beyond this world. Reading is the best kind of adventure!
safoga at gmail dot com
I read to remember that there are more worlds than my own.
I read Non Fiction so I read to learn and open my mind to new subjects.
I love to read to learn and escape reality.
I read to learn new things & escape to new places. I also read because I just plain enjoy it!
I read for pleasure, relaxation and enlightenment. In each book I read, I find nuggets of information I’d not known before. I visit different lands, times, cultures and societies. You can reach me at my blog, http://www.wellplacedwords.blogspot.com
I read to relax!
I read bc I’m a writer. I love getting lost in stories. Its how I unwind. My favorite novel is The Time Traveler’s Wife

I read for entertainment. Sci-fi in books is so much better than sci-fi on tv.
I read fiction to escape and non-fiction to learn. One can never get enough of either.
I read because I can. I realize how much more fortunate I am than 80% of the world’s population to be able to read. It is certainly not something that I take for granted, ergo, I read everything that crosses my path: manuals, contracts, fiction, non-fiction, historical books, the internet….I simply cannot imagine my world devoid of that gift!
I love to read because I get to travel to different worlds and meeting fascinating people. Every book takes me on a great adventure! You can find me at my blog http://condascreativecenter.blogspot.com/ or on Facebook.
I read to learn new things and also for entertainment. It’s a nice break from all the other things that need to get done.
I read because it takes me to faraway places and storylines. It’s my favorite thing to do.
I don’t read because I don’t have much time but when I do read something I just skim over it quickly.
I read to learn and for enjoyment
I read to learn and to be inspired!
I read because i love to escape. A book is an escape that won’t hurt me, like eating or drugs.
I hated to read thanks to the US Public School System. Mrs. Yusavage, I don’t see how knowing what Mr. Pumblechook had for breakfast even remotely helps me understand Great Expectations or life! When I had kids, the parenting books all said that I should read to set a good example for my kids. And guess what – if you aren’t reading Shakespeare or Chaucer, reading can be quite enjoyable! I read every night before bed now.
I read because I love to be transported into the stories. It’s a great getaway from the stresses of everyday life!

I read ALOT because it takes you to another place almost like another world. Sometimes I can see myself as the character on whatever great adventure or story I am reading about. I can tell you that it sure beats everyday life here. nickbug2000@gmail.com
I love reading, its a way to escape the dull drum life of being a housewife.
I read because I see knowledge as power. I like to stay informed on research pertaining to my degree and reading helps me accomplish this.
I read so to keep my mind active!
I have a very hectic life, work, kids, household, social engagements etc and when i get a minute I like to open a book and read, it is relaxing and the stress is gone. Other people need Spa treatments and such things, I really just need a cup of coffee and a book.
I love to read because I love to escape into another world or time. With a book, you can visit places you may never get to do in your real life.
I love because it’s a part of my very fabric. I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember, and I just love it.
I read because to me, it’s the same as breathing. I can’t not read. I have to learn something new every day, or experience something through words. I love the internet because there is so much to learn by simply reading a subject that interests you. I love curling up on the couch and not getting up until I finished the book. It’s a passion and one that I hope I have passed down to my kids.
i read because i have to. it is like breathing.

I read because I enjoy it, but I also think the experience you have while reading is something you can’t get from anything else.

for entertainment
I read to fill up time. At home, I hardly have any free time, so I do most of my reading during downtime at work.
txhottie_86 at yahoo dot com
Reading is therapy. It’s what I do to relax and escape the day’s stresses.
rmartinclarke @ gmail.com
I read in my free time to learn new things. I’ve always loved learning.
I live in a world of taking care of three disabled children with a terrible bone disease. Reality hits me in the face on a day to day basis. Books transport me to secret and magical places and enable me to see things from someone elses perspective..
I read for entertainment and to gain knowledge. I love to take myself to a different place, time, world..etc and get totally and completely lost in it.
I read for so many different reasons. Reading good novels is great and economical entertainment – ready whenever you like and almost endless in variety. I read to gain information also. Much of my job involves reading and interpreting or applying what I read, so reading is integral to my livelihood as well. I also read for inspiration and spiritual reasons. This helps refresh and restore me when I am discouraged and filled with doubt.
I read because is relaxes me and is entertaining.
I read for the pure pleasure of escaping reality for a while. Losing myself in a good book helps me unwind while giving my imagination quite a workout. ๐
I love to read because I can escape my everyday life and transport myself to another place. Reading has always been a huge part of my life and I’d be lost without reading! I’m going back to school to get my masters and teaching credential so I can share my love of books with my students!
nancymeyer1 at gmail dot com
I love to read because I go to a place I am not, a time that I am not and puts me in a different time warp. Reading makes me laugh, cry and love!
I read to escape daily life. I love those hours that I can slip away into another life, another world, another love…
I like to read because it’s a good stress reliever and it lets me step into someone else’s world for a little while.
I read because it brings me into a different kind of world. I like meeting new people and traveling, and reading gives me a way to do that without even leaving the room!
I love to read because it allows me to experience adventures that I can’t otherwise afford.
I found my love of reading in 3rd grade when my teacher read Little House books thru the year. I am interested in checking out your book too. looks interesting.
I read because it keeps your mind focused and working longer.. I’m starting to read more now to get ready to go back to college.
I love to read because it takes me to places that I have never been.
I have always told my children that they can go anywhere in the world by picking up a book.
If I am really interested in a book I can put myself in the first person and read through it as if I am there.
And have always loved reading like that.
jweezie43[at]gmail[dot]com
I read because it allows me to escape from the stresses of life, even if just for an hour or two
I grew up reading because my dad introduced me to books. I kept reading through adolescence because books gave me information, allowed me to escape into other worlds, and helped me better understand my life. These days, I belong to online book clubs, review books for my blog, study fiction to improve my own stories, and still pretty much learn everything from books. Reading is part of who I am.
I like to read memoirs and romance.
read for info and entertainment ty.
I read because it relaxes me and also I learn about different times and countries.I learn about people and their cultures.
I read because it takes me to the places I am reading about, also it is very informative about life in a different time or country.
I read to escape my currenty reality!
I read because while im doing it i feel like im in another world, living those characters life, imagine new places … living new experiences, using my imagination and travelling trought the pages.
I read for a variety of reasons. First, it gives me a chance to experience life through the eyes of the characters. I can travel places without spending money I don’t have and still experience the sites and sounds of new areas. Finally, I read to relax and escape the stress of my day, week, etc.
Thank you for the giveaway!
amberrose95(at)gmail(dot)com
I read to escape my currenty reality and to go to places and times that I could never even imagine. It’s like a time machine.
I read primarily for entertainment. But I cannot think of a more enjoyable hobby that makes so many demands. Reading a book calls for silence and solitude. It requires a block of time. Most importantlyโthe most fun aspectโit demands all of youโeyes and brain, mind and imagination, emotions and even the spirit. There is nothing passive or automatic about it. Those who disdain reading donโt know what theyโre missing. Perhaps I can entice them with a rousing good storyโฆ
I read to escape.
I read because I enjoy learning new things and also get inspiration from books. I especially enjoy reading self help books to give me hope.
I read because I am compelled to. As a beginning writer, I find myself looking at the mechanics of the story as well as the story itself. I’m fascinated with how different people can put the very same words so many different ways.
Also too, I HAVE to read certain authors. JR Ward is in my RWA chapter, and I honestly believe she is one of the best writers out there, and I’m not saying that just BECAUSE she’s in my chapter. Certain people you just have to read everything they put out. Ward, Kenyon, Hamilton, Susan Mallory, and so many others.
That’s why I read.
I read because I find it relaxing.
[…] January Contest […]
I read whomever is brought in front of me by the Universe. Things come to pass as they are supposed to and I grow spiritually from each book by many different authors. Right now I am reading a book by John Edward – Infinite Quest.
I read to see strong women learn to make good choices and stupid men learn how to appreciate them. I also like to see a good HEA to counteract the bad news that surrounds us on a daily basis.
I read for 2 main reasons. One because I have always loved to read. Ever since I was a kid, I can remember reading. In high school, I would be excited to get assigned a new book to read and finish it in one day. The second reason I read is to escape to another world after a stressful day. It allows me an hour or two just to be in a different world for awhile!

I read because you can learn so much from it.
I love to read because it is an escape from reality. It is a chance to get into someone else’s world to totally relax and unwind. Besides learning something new it expands my horizons.
I read for relaxation. Ater a hectic day at work, I learned that I can relieve my stress with a cup of cocoa and a good book to read. I like reading all kinds of books.
I read to destress, find encouragement, get lifted up, keep my mind fresh and to write reviews for authors. I read because my Mother taught me to at a young age and it relaxes me.
Like right now I’m so discouraged over loss of a dear friend and problems today that it takes my mind off of it.
Sigh, I would love to enter this contest, but I don’t want paper wasted on my behalf. I wish you would use random.org instead
I read to see things from someone else’s perspective and to just zone out for a while.

I read to learn new words and use them in everyday speech to sound well spoken !
I read to relax and learn new things.
I READ to transport me to another world, place or time. When My day is bad I love how I could just focus on somebody else…another story to change the way I think and quite possibly have me learn and reflect on my own situation here in real life!
I read to learn new things.

I though about this long and hard and came up with a very, very long answer, but you know what, it all boiled down to four words.
I read… to Know.
I read to improve my writing skills and for enjoyment. Also I read to be able to connect better with people.

I read to learn new things and relax.

I read to learn new things; to feel intense emotions whether happy, sad, afraid, or anything; and to be transported from reality for a few hours!<
I read to get away from my life and enjoy someone elses. I really love historical romances and how they make me feel. The men are amazing and I wish we had men like that now. Thanks so much for the chance.
I’ve always read. My mom used to take me to the library as a toddler and ever since I’ve just loved the experience of picking out a book to read, going home and snuggling in for a good read. I think it’s got something to do with it being someone else’s story but you get to fill in things from your own imagination so the story becomes your own, too.
I read because other people’s stories fascinate, interest, and entertain me, and because I hope one day to return the favor. ๐
I read for research and entertainment. I have gained much knowledge from researching. Digital Magazine are great too.
I read because to read is a precious gift to savor as I delve into the words of an author not only to explore their thoughts, feelings, and adventures, but to develope my own as well.
i read because it helps me to relax and escape the routine
I read because I’d die without it! Seriously – I always have to have books in process, and around me. I take them when ever I go any where…. I read to escape, to learn, to laugh…
I read for knowledge and entertainment.
I read because it’s how I exercise my imagination. Like a muscle, if you let it lay sedentary it will become weak.
I read because it teaches me about the world and other people, it lets me know about experiences I will never have, and it keeps me informed of what’s going on in the world.
I read because I find it relaxing and entertaining as well as enlightening.
Hi Sally, What a great idea for a contest and a generous prize. I read because I love words and stories that entertain, inspire, or inform me about a world built by the writer.
I read because I enjoy seeing the storylines in my head.
I read to learn new things and to expand my world.
I have been an avid reader since I first saw words on a page. I was the little girl under the sheets with a flashlight. One of my favorite stories was the time in fourth grade when the nun caught me reading ‘And Then There Were None” AKA 10 Little Indians (Christie). She was hig-strung and convinced I would become a mass murderer. I love to get lost in a good book, its better than real life. Because I love to read, now I write.
I’m always finding new things to learn how to do. Please enter me, thank you
I read because it gives me an escape. I look forward to relaxing while reading a book that will take me away to a new reality for a bit.
I’ve read books and then seen movies or documentaries based on the books that I’ve read. Movies/documentaries cannot explain in depth the emotions, motiviations and cultures of the characters/situations in the way that books can. Only a good, full-length book can impart knowledge.
Since I have retired I love to read, it helps me wind down and sometimes helps me sleep
I read because it is a way to escape, to be and to participate in a place that is more than my own life or that is exactly like my life. It doesn’t matter the type, just as long as it allows my imagination to go to other places.
I read because knowledge is power, and ignorance is not bliss
I love to read all different types of books because sometimes it takes me on adventures to different places and I enjoy reading. Other times I read because I’m learning about something new.
I like to relax
Reading calms me. I love to think that the people in the novel are “real” and did whatever the author’s imagination created. As many readers, I long for there to be a story inside me that jumps out and becomes read by dozens.
I read to learn. I want to maximize my knowledge so as to become boder line omnipotent.
I would love to enter please! My name is Amber. I read to inspire my own life, for fun, and to learn more about the world.
I am a foodhistorian- in order to do my job, I MUST read, all the time, every day! I am constantly searching for historical recipes.
I read because it helps me to imagine places I have never been to and feel as if I have actually been there.
Hi, Sally. One of the reasons why I read is to escape reality, because living in a world where bad things happen everyday, it is good to journey to places where the awful things can’t come and find me. Besides, reality is not that great to begin with, and if I can’t leave reality for a few hours, then what can I do? Also the place where I live doesn’t mesh well with me, so reading saves my life. The only other thing that helps me with that is cinema. It’s good to read to leave all the insanity behind.
I read because I can. Because it is as necessary to my well-being as oxygen. Because I couldn’t imagine NOT reading. I told my three kids that a love for reading will give them the greatest pleasure in life, and will open the door to everything that is possible within them. We don’t have a TV, and we read. My three children see us reading, and they read. Silence (and the occasional sound of a page turning) are lovely sounds in our home.

Hi Sally!
Why do I read? My real reading began with Old Yeller, poor dog. I found reading took me to places I’ve never been. Showed me things I never saw before. Invoked feeling I never before felt. Reading opened the world up to me. I can go anywhere, and be anyone.I was Tarsan through several books. You aught to see me swinging through the jungle. I was John Carter on Mars. The Hardy Boys, and I solved many crimes. The real question should be those who don’t read is, Why Not?
Sally! I have always been an avid reader, needing to use reading glasses by my junior year of high school. When I was younger I read to avoid my mother. Sounds awful, but it’s true. She would fuss at me for having my nose in a book. As I got older and began reading a wider variety of genres I realized I was totally addicted to the written word in most any form. I even read the labels on the back of cans and bottles. I knew my local librarians on a first name basis. My dad gave me an old electric typewriter when I was about 12. That was the day I realized I could manufacture my drug of choice. You ask why I read…. Just like the reason I write, I can’t not read.
Hi Sally, I read for three reasons: 1) to escape; 2) because I’m an editor; and 3) because I belong to a book group. The books I read to escape are primarily fantasy, and occasionally science fiction and light horror. The books I read which I edit are all genres. The books I read for my book group tend to be more mainstream and oftentimes thought-provoking. Thanks for the contest!
