Zvi Zaks is our guest this week on Writerly Wednesday. \u00a0I met Zvi through my work with Damnation Books and Eternal Press.<\/p>\n

Bio<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’ve been writing off and on literally for decades with little luck in publishing. I could blame it on my schedule as a doctor — too many years having a 24-7 call schedule — but plenty of other doctors have managed to combine writing and medicine. The real problem was the off and on had too much off and not enough on. Internet workshops like\u00a0http:\/\/sff.onlinewritingworkshop.com\/<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0www.critters.org<\/a>\u00a0improved my work enough to sell a few short stories, \u00a0but what I really wanted was to publish a book. Second only to becoming a grandfather–something I had no control over–becoming a published novelist was my biggest goal.<\/p>\n

I thought my writing was good, \u00a0but an unrelenting series of rejections almost had me ready to give up. Then Lilly Press accepted my novel IMPLAC. I was ecstatic. Even the editing process was a joy. Unfortunately, \u00a0Lilly went bankrupt and it was back to the slush pile for me. At least now I knew that some professionals valued my work. “Query Tracker” –\u00a0http:\/\/querytracker.net\/forum\/\u00a0– taught me how to write a decent query, \u00a0I sent out a batch of letters to small publishers, \u00a0and in 2010 Eternal Press accepted A VIRTUAL AFFAIR. No ecstasy this time, \u00a0but I was still happy that at age 68 I would finally have a book for sale. Since then, \u00a0I’ve had two more books published – IMPLAC, \u00a0with eStar, \u00a0about an evil robot that claims to have reformed, \u00a0and TRUE SON OF ASMODEUS, \u00a0a different kind of vampire story.<\/p>\n

It’s never too late to pursue your dream.<\/p>\n

And now, \u00a0I even have two grandchildren.<\/p>\n

Excerpt<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are two different accounts of how Stephan Harper died.\u00a0 They agree only in the date, \u00a01888, \u00a0the year before A. Hitler was whelped.\u00a0 The police record describes it as a simple murder.\u00a0 A few days after an officer found his body found in a deserted alley, \u00a0a vagabond was caught trying to sell a jewel-encrusted brooch belonging to Stephan.\u00a0 The man confessed to robbery, \u00a0but proclaimed his innocence of the murder up until the moment when the gallows\u2019 trapdoor sprung open.\u00a0 Nevertheless, \u00a0the police had no doubts of his guilt.<\/p>\n

The archivists for the Perceptives insist the vagabond was innocent, \u00a0that Stephan\u2019s death, \u00a0was the latest in an ancient series.\u00a0 In an account rich with unverifiable details, \u00a0they describe Stephan\u2019s last hours.\u00a0 According to them, \u00a0Stephen, \u00a0a bank clerk, \u00a0had to work late one evening.\u00a0 When he finally pushed open the thick wooden doors and stepped into the street, \u00a0the sun had long set.\u00a0 Wind howled and frost stung his face.\u00a0 He patted his pocket with a brooch he planned to give his fianc\u00e9, \u00a0and started walking towards his boarding house.\u00a0 The buildings lining the empty roadway were dark, \u00a0black cliffs against an abandoned canyon.\u00a0 Not a cat crouching in the gloom disturbed the desolation.\u00a0 Clouds passing over the moon cast shifting shadows like rats sneaking along the curbside.\u00a0 Stephan shivered and buttoned the top of his coat.<\/p>\n

Two blocks from his residence, \u00a0footsteps, \u00a0the relentless smack of stiff leather on hard stone, \u00a0echoed behind him.\u00a0 He glanced back and saw a shadowy figure.\u00a0 Rumors of a demonic fiend that stalked young people and drank their blood had terrorized the city for weeks, \u00a0and had left Stephan\u2019s fianc\u00e9 in constant dread.\u00a0 Just yesterday, \u00a0he had laughed at her fear, \u00a0but now, \u00a0with that ominous figure trailing, \u00a0terror colder than the wind pierced his chest.\u00a0 He tried to swallow, \u00a0but his mouth had become dry.\u00a0 He walked faster.\u00a0 The footsteps drew closer.\u00a0 He panicked and ran.<\/p>\n

A dark alleyway appeared, \u00a0and with it a thought entered his head–hide here.\u00a0 Panting in terror, \u00a0he turned in.\u00a0 But the path ended after just a few yards, \u00a0leaving him trapped.<\/p>\n

The figure approached.\u00a0 \u2018You have nothing to fear, \u2019 a voice in his mind said.<\/p>\n

It lied.\u00a0 As the drab and weary looking form advanced, \u00a0Stephan knew this was the supernatural killer everyone spoke about.\u00a0 With a grimace, \u00a0he unbuttoned the top of his coat, \u00a0and pulled out his defense–a silver crucifix.\u00a0 This holy replica, \u00a0a gift from his mother, \u00a0would surely protect him.\u00a0 His voice rang out in the night.\u00a0 \u201cIn the name of the Father, \u00a0the Son, \u00a0and the Holy Ghost I bid you depart.\u201d<\/p>\n

The specter ignored the adjuration and walked to his victim, \u00a0yanked the icon from its fragile chain and stared at it, \u00a0turning it back and forth.\u00a0 He looked up at Stephan.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ve been reading too many novels.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t bother my master.\u201d\u00a0 He stuffed the cross into Stephan\u2019s coat pocket.\u00a0 \u201cAnd it won\u2019t help you.\u201d\u00a0 He put his hand on the youth\u2019s shoulder and drew him closer.<\/p>\n

A stench of vomit coming from that minion from Hell made Stephan retch.\u00a0 \u201cJesus, \u00a0save me, \u201d he said, \u00a0his voice too quiet, \u00a0his hand struggling to trace the sign of the cross.\u00a0 But his neck obeyed the vampire and bent to the side, \u00a0exposing the jugular vein to the apparition\u2019s lengthening fangs.<\/p>\n

Before starting this odyssey, \u00a0I would have believed the official report.\u00a0 Now I know better.<\/p>\n

Interview<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

1. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In three days, \u00a0all power will go off, \u00a0everywhere for a very long time. \u00a0What will you include in your author survival kit?<\/p>\n

A solar powered laptop.\u00a0 Do such exist?\u00a0 I’d certainly look hard.\u00a0 As for my personal survival kit, \u00a0that’s a different question.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Where did the idea for the work you are promoting arise?<\/p>\n

I love Bela Lugosi in the movie DRACULA, \u00a0but, \u00a0as a Jew who is serious about his identity, \u00a0the heavy Christian theme was off putting. \u00a0This is my version of the vampire legend.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What do you like to read?<\/p>\n

Science fiction which makes me think, \u00a0either by introducing me to new ideas or by teaching me something new.\u00a0 For that matter, \u00a0I like any books that make me think or teach me something new in an entertaining way.<\/p>\n

From Sally – I homeschool, pretty much year round and this Summer’s topic is\u00a0Literature. \u00a0As a teacher I knew I had done my job when both kids began reading for entertainment and ‘to find out.’ \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

4. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Tell us about the most exciting place you have ever visited?<\/p>\n

The Western Wall in\u00a0Jerusalem\u00a0(formerly called the wailing wall, \u00a0but there’s no crying there since the Israelis captured it from the Jordanians.) \u00a0It may sound silly, \u00a0but when I’m standing in front of those massive stones, \u00a0I feel like I’m at the center of the world.<\/p>\n

5. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What is the most mundane, \u00a0day to day, \u00a0thing you can share about yourself?<\/p>\n

Shaving my scalp.<\/p>\n

6. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What scares you the most?<\/p>\n

People who think they know what is best for me or my loved ones and won’t seriously listen as to whether I agree.<\/p>\n

7. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Tell us anything but keep it G rated.<\/p>\n

When I married my wife, \u00a0I told her she would always be my bride. \u00a0That was many years ago, \u00a0but she still is (though she gets embarrassed when I tell other people about it.)<\/p>\n
